SWPPP Inspections & Documentation
Regular inspections are a critical component of SWPPP compliance. Understand the requirements for inspection frequency, documentation, and corrective actions.
Under the EPA's Construction General Permit, site operators must conduct regular inspections of all stormwater controls and document their findings. Missing or incomplete inspection records are one of the most common SWPPP violations.
Inspection Frequency
- Standard: At least once every 7 calendar days
- Rain event: Within 24 hours after a rainfall event of 0.25 inches or more
- Some states require more frequent inspections
What to Inspect
- All erosion and sediment control BMPs
- All stormwater discharge points
- Areas of active construction and land disturbance
- Material storage and waste areas
- Vehicle entrance and exit points
Documentation Requirements
Each inspection must be documented with the date, inspector name, weather conditions, findings, and any corrective actions taken. Records must be kept for at least 3 years after permit termination.
