How to Write a SWPPP

Writing a SWPPP requires a systematic approach that addresses your site's specific conditions, potential pollutant sources, and the best management practices (BMPs) needed to protect water quality.

Step 1: Site Assessment

Begin with a thorough assessment of your site including topography, soil types, drainage patterns, and proximity to water bodies. Identify all potential sources of stormwater pollution.

Step 2: Identify Potential Pollutant Sources

Document all activities and materials on-site that could contribute pollutants to stormwater runoff — including sediment, chemicals, fuels, concrete washout, and construction debris.

Step 3: Select BMPs

Choose appropriate erosion controls, sediment controls, and good housekeeping practices for each phase of construction. BMPs must be installed before land disturbance begins.

Step 4: Document Everything

Your SWPPP document must include site maps, BMP locations, inspection schedules, maintenance procedures, and responsible personnel. Keep it on-site and available for inspection.
